Current Curriculum

We are a little eclectic, as we figure out what works for us. This is what we are using currently:

Math U See
First Language Lessons (1st & 2nd graders)
Rod & Staff English (3rd – 5th graders)
Spelling City (an online spelling program)
This program is nice because it frees up so much precious time. I am typing in my own spelling lists from McGuffy’s Eclectic Spelling Book (a public domain resource). I can also write my own sentences, and if you are a paid user ($25/yr), the program tracks all progress for you. There are also games to play and you may print your own handwriting sheets with spelling words to copy. Several writing styles are available.
Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing
This is on our virtual box, due to the fact that my husband, as a supporter and contributor of the open-source community, must use Ubuntu. Honestly I’m beginning to like it myself. It’s really snappy and the blue screen of death has become a thing of the past :-) .
Sonlight Core 4 (mostly using the reader/read-aloud books)
Veritas Press History Cards & Worksheets/Tests
This is something new for us. There is a memory song which covers a mention of each of 32 history topics from 1815 to the present. I am a little leery of the song because I find it to be extremely repetitive, and I wonder if it will be difficult for the kids to learn. But we are going to try it out. I am excited about the systematic approach, combined with all of the extra reading we are doing.
Tapestry Books
We used Tapestry (year 2) last year and the kids learned so much from reading on their own. Their books are focused on non-fiction, and there were only a few of the books that were somewhat boring. This year we are just going to check out many of the books for year 3 from the library, to supplement the Sonlight readers and read-alouds.
